Well, I played on VH/VH, but in Co-op with Chaos as ally. To sum it up, the portrayal of the Skaven in the End Times diverged really far in many areas from how the Skaven had always been portrayed in Warhammer lore. It makes totally no sense for a god of scheming and backstabbing to suddenly stop backstabbing and become a loyal pet to the Chaos gods. Furthermore, the Horned Rat was always said to be the epitome of Skavenness, eternally scheming and with a cunning that could give Tzeentch a run for his money. Like the other Gods of the Warhammer setting, the Horned Rat and the Chaos Gods are in competition with one another. The Horned Rat has never been affiliated with the Chaos Gods before, and it doesn't make much sense for him to be. If a Skaven allies with someone against a third party, they are only doing so in order to stab their ally in the back right after the fight is done and seize all power for themselves.Īnd I don't know how I feel about the Skaven allying with Chaos being part of the Horned Rat's plan. Skaven never keep alliances for long, they are not loyal to their allies and they are loathe to share power unless absolutely necessary. They certainly were strong enough to do it, given how they went from being the setting's comic relief faction to suddenly destroying most of the world in the space of a single book (far more than Chaos ever accomplished in the history of Warhammer). They should have stabbed Chaos in the back at the first opportunity they got. Normally, their opportunistic and backstabbing nature means that the Skaven make very poor allies. The problem is how loyal they suddenly were to Chaos. They are opportunistic yes, so it is totally within their nature to do that. The problem is not that the Skaven allied with Chaos. Thanquol, the most hilariously incompetent and cowardly Skaven to have ever lived, somehow was appointed as Seerlord. That was another really stupid plot development. Finding a grandiose way to blow up your enemies and blowing up yourself in the process is the most Skaven thing you could possibly do.Īh, yes. The only good part regarding the Skaven in the End Times was their plot to blow up the moon in order to destroy the Lizardman, which of course would also have wiped out the Skaven themselves (along with all other live on the planet). But that is just the End Time in general.
The Skaven in the End Times are just so different from the Skaven in earlier works, it is really jarring. Historically, the Skaven had always had a tendency to side with underdog factions against strong, threatening opponents (like when they helped Alcadizaar kill Nagash) because the Skaven have a vested interest in not seeing anyone become too powerful.Īnd then they suddenly decide to side with Chaos, which is not only the strongest force in the world but also one that threatens to literally consume the world and tear it apart.
